OMP008 Benjamin Thorn Blue Wombat
The Blue Wombat burrows away energetically in 7/8-time, the recorder's grouping mostly at variance with the piano's, the latter making much use of the interval of a second. There is a recuperative middle section, a simple stepwise recorder melody over a pedal A in the piano. Then the activity resumes, ending with a 16-bar stretch of continuous multiphonics from the recorder. The solo part is marked 'F at the outset and stays loud, while the piano is marked 'mf' or 'mp; and explores various tessituras. The composer distils a most unusual tonal picture from his chosen means. The wombat's excavations take about two-and-a quarter minutes.
