In March 2024, the recorder teacher Elisabeth Neuser from Ulm asked me for simple pieces for her students. I referred her to my collections Karungi and Jangu Wano. 'No, much simpler'! she replied. She was thinking of a melody consisting of only five notes: g-a-b-c-d or g-a-b flat-c-d. In other words for real beginners.

Composer Soren Sieg (born 1966) learned the recorder, violin and piano as a child, and later learned the saxophone, trumpet, guitar and drums. He studied music and politics in Hamburg and Bielfeld and sang in the a capella group LaleLu from 1994 to 2012. His African inspired compositions have celebrated premieres in Mumbai and Tokyo, Berlin and Basel, Tapei and St Paul, Sydney and Antwerp, Cape Town and Amsterdam, Paris and Riga. He is the musical director of the cabaret theatre Die Stachelschweinein Berlin and has published 13 books and 8 plays. Moeck Verlag has published pina ya phala and mavumo ya uana. He lives as a freelance composer and write in Hamburg and Warsaw.
