Lance Eccles - Eclipse - AATTB - OMP262
Eccles presents this substantial pair of impressionist quintet pieces in that most player-and-listener friendly scoring of 2 trebles, 2 tenors and bass. in the first of the pair, Lunar Eclipse, flowing, rising and falling phrases drift between major and minor tonality to depict the rising moon. The middle section, Total Eclipse, offer the bass player a graceful flowing line;and Emergence from Totality brings the movement to a close with a shortened version of the opening material. Solar Eclipse follows, and opens with sunrise which darkens as the shadow grows. A corona appears and sunlight reemerges where rising scales lead to the most light filled of all keys; C major. A competent, technically secure quintet of players could make good use of this music as an attractive concert item, provided it was programmed with effectively contrasting material: the two eclipses are of roughly the same duration and exactly the same tempo at 70 crotchets per minute, both in quadruple time.
