Composer David Ellis was born in 1933 in Liverpool and studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music. From 1964 he worked for the BBC in Manchester becoming Head of Music (BBC North). 

Fred's Blue Ginger Staircase Music was first performed by John Turner (recorder) and Neil Smith (guitar) for whom it was written on 21st June 2002 in the Llandudno Festival and it recorded by the same artists on the CD entitled 'Hat Box'/
