Fiona Loader - Rose Garden Suite. SATB recorders. Orpheus Music OMP317

At first glance these look to have a strong Baroque influence with fantasia like semi quaver outbursts and occasional inverted mordent signs. The cadential trill figurations n Brisk Walk at dawn are written out in full as if tongued, but might benefit from slurred articulation. Siesta Under a Palm Tree has a tango like bass line underpinning the homophonic upper parts, The gradually quickening rhythms, featuring some sequential figures, lead to a melismatic page where good timing is essential to ensure the demisemiquavers flow from one voice to another seamlessly. The frequently changing key and time signatures will require practice. Stroll Through a Rose Garden is a Theme with Variations of changing mood and voicing. The move from the opening Allegro con brio chorale-like theme to the Adagio e espressivo of Variation 2, via Variation 1, is well managed with a thinning of texture and ritenuto. A key signature of four flats for Variation 2 won't be to everyone's liking, but well worth the effort to develop clean fingering coordination and fluid semiquaver scales. An appealing addition to the quartet repertoire and one I look forward to programming. Review written by Adam J Dopadlik
