Orpheus Music OMP318

An evocative title matches this intense and imaginative work of three Chorales interspersed with three Duets and four Episodes. The Duets create a change of texture, and a chance to change instruments for the Episode. Three levels of vibrato are specified and control is required from all to ensure a graduated transition from one to the next. Several glissandi and a tutti flutter tongued are the only other nods to extended techniques. Episode 2 is marked 'Freely, wildly, in individual tempi'. The aleatoric nature of the short, ornamental figures is both random and effective. A strong leader will be required and a secure sense of rhythm is essential as triplets proliferate, though they're just the appetiser for the quintuplet quavers. This demands advanced ensemble skills, continuous visual communication between all players, and a firm understanding of the structure. Episode 3 is very attractive with two descants above two bass instruments which intertwine creating almost a 2-part structure with 4 lines. A work of great integrity and quality aimed at advanced and conservatoire level quartets.
