Alan Bullard was born in London in 1947 and studied under Herbert Howells at the Royal College of Music. His works for recorder have entered the instrument's standard repertoire.
Sonata for Three was first performed by John Turner, Graham Salvage and Pamela Nash on 10th September 2002. The recorder part uses descant, treble and tenor instruments, but can also be played on the flute with the adjustments shown in the score and part. The bassoon part may alternatively be played on cello, and the harpsichord part on piano.
