Written for Carol Dolmetsch and Joseph Saxby and first performed by them in 1979. The four movements consist of a brief Prelude leading immediately into a Moto Perpetuo in which a lyrical theme is set against a persistent ostinato figure. Similar material is used in the following Aria, but at a slower tempo, while the finale is a bizarre burlesque in which allusions are made to motifs from the previous movements.
