The Dashing White Sergeant and other Scottish dance tunes

The Dashing White Sergeant and other Scottish dance tunes is arranged for Recorder Trio (Descant - Treble & Tenor) by Marg Hall. This collection is comprised of:

1. The Dashing White Sergeant: (Probably with 'The Gay Gordons', one of the best known Scottish ceilidh dances. The tune was written by Sir Henry Bishop in 1826.)

2. Orange and Blue: (This well known (in Scotland) tune is a Highland Schottische (a bouncy 'heel, toe, heel, toe' dance)

3. The Cock o' the North: This very old tune would accompany the dance 'The Gay Gordons'. It was first written down over 300 years ago, when it was called 'Jumping Joan'. As a pipe tune, it is the regimental march of the Gordon Highlanders. The Duke of Gordon (1747-1827) was so powerful in NE Scotland that he was known as 'The Cock o' the North'. 

4. Scotland the Brave: Another tune for the dance 'The Gay Gordons', this dates from the late 19th century. It has become an unofficial Scottish national anthem, second only to 'Flower of Scotland'. 

The composer Marg Hall discovered the recorder as an adult, having earlier learned piano and classical guitar. She has taught the recorder in the Edinburgh area for many years. Her compositions and arrangements have been  published firstly by Hawthorns music, and latterly by Peacock Press. She has been a member of the recorder consort 'Solsequium' for many years, and am a member of the Scottish Recorder Orchestra. She is also a founder-member [in 1978] of the 'Hadley Court Singers'.
