Lance Eccles - Twelve Hymns - TTB
Orpheus Music OMP270
Before retiring from his day job as a senior lecturer at Macquarie University in Sydney, the Australian arranger of these hymns, Lance Eccles taught and wrote about several languages, and also wrote a grammatical commentary on the Syriac version of the Gospel of Mark.
This is a straightforward collection of hymns, each of which is one page in length. The titles are:
*On the Jordan Bank the Baptist Cried
*Sing, my Tongue (Pange lingua)
*I Praised the Earth in Beauty Seen
*O What Their Joy and their Glory Must Be
*When I Survey the Wondrous Cross
*The Day thou Gavest
*Light's Abode, Celestial Salem (Regent's Square)
*Immortal Love, Forever Full
*Hail to the Brightness
*O Sion, Haste
*Immortal, Invisible
*Ye Holy Angels Bright (Darwall's 148)
Several of these hymn tunes will be familiar to groups who regularly play in churches, though sometimes paired with a different text than what is given here.
Each part has interesting moments, making this more appropriate fora an intermediate group. This would be perfect for moments in a church service that need a shorter piece of music.
It is nice to have good arrangements for low recorders as an option.

These are well crafted, the parts flow with passing notes for interest. The bass lines are especially good
with counterpoint and moving quavers. There are few accidentals, clearly printed, and a group of
modest ability would gain pleasure in producing a clean performance.
