Description

Contemporary Piece: Three lively rhythmic pieces that use multiphonics and voice.

Recorder:

  • In Movements 2 and 3 the voice is notated on a second (bracketed staff). It may be sung an octave lower if necessary. Use a throaty grunt with a 'd'. Multiphonics: adjust breath pressure so that two (or more) separate notes are heard, one close to the base note and another higher one.
  • Base note uses normal (commonest) fingering except where alternative fingering is given (in brackets) or modified with a + indicating an additional 7th finger. The first time a multiphonic occurs the most prominent upper partial is given in brackets.
  • Half blowing (or angle blowing) is used most of the second movement. Hold the recorder at an angle and blow across the mouthpiece rather than directly into it. It ends when the solid circle is reached.
  • Roll the recorder in hands as you play: give upper partials and whistle tone as holes are momentarily vented. Flutter tonguing fl roll an rrr (or gargle in back of throat).

Percussion requires:

  • 4 small tom toms (round headed notes in spaces)
  • 4 tin cans (biscuit in etc) (x note heads in spaces)
  • The entire second movement is played with the fingers.
  • Score 17 pages. Parts: Recorder: 9 pages. Percussion: 7 pages.
