VENUS BAY FIRESIDE SESSIONS
On May 6, 2023, Ryan and Rodney travelled to Venus Bay, South Gippsland (Victoria, Australia), Bunurong and
Gunaikurnai Country, to spend a long weekend recording improvised duos using various recorders and end-blown flutes. All
tracks on this album (except Track 17 – recorded live in concert, 2016) are presented exactly as they were performed in a
friend’s Venus Bay beach house. The track titles all relate to the artists’ wider Venus Bay experience and were chosen after
the recordings were made. The house recording sessions were held fireside as the weather was consistently wet, windy, and
cold. Ryan and Rodney made time each day to enjoy walks along the beach near Point Smythe. Sea Eagles, Pacific Gulls and
Oyster Catchers were commonly seen along the way. The sunsets and dramatic storm cloud formations were spectacular, and
humbling.

"It’s good to hear music that sounds so fresh and newly minted. As if channelling visual artist Paul
Klee, Rodney and Ryan ‘take a line for a walk’, moving freely from different starting points, playing
games using hockets, jigs, ostinatos, divisions and rhythmic variations, to improvise a collection of
musical vignettes. Long live the wooden fipple flute played with such skill.”
— Michael Atherton, Australian musician, composer, academic and author, March 2024
“What a beautifully produced recording in terms of sound […] There’s remarkable L-R separation
between the channels and remarkable chemistry between the players. Remember, these are
improvisations […] a really fine release.”
— Michael Field, 2MBS Fine Music Sydney, ‘Just In’, Broadcast 9-4-2024
"[...] these pieces have a playful jazz-influenced aesthetic. The music bubbles with engaging themes
and rich rhythmic figures and interplay.
— Tom Bickley, American Recorder, Summer 2024, Vol. LXV, No. 2, pp. 43-44

DUO WINDBORNE
Recorder players Ryan Williams and Rodney Waterman improvise together freely within a flexible framework of rhythmic,
melodic, and textural groove. They experiment with playful transitions and juxtapositions; listening and responding in real
time to each other’s spontaneous musical suggestions and explorations. Duo Windborne first performed in concert in
December 2016, and have since published videos (YouTube) of many of their improvisatory collaborations. Venus Bay
Fireside Sessions is the duo’s first album release.
